Follows the writer Günter Kunert on his return to West Berlin after his emigration from the GDR.

A woman meets a man in a bar late in the evening and goes to his apartment. A woman picks up a girl from school and runs with the child through the park. If we see such scenes in a movie, or are we watching such situations in life, we quickly believe we know who these women are: a woman looking for a fleeting adventure in the first scene, a caring mother in the second.

Photojournalist Lena’s career soars when she captures the gruesome victims of the “Snow White Killer” who stages corpses artistically. When her sister’s friend becomes the latest victim, Lena hunts the murderer alone. As tabloids vilify all taxi drivers, Berlin’s cabbies form a vigilante group - with help from union boss Paul - to catch the killer in their ranks. When Lena falls for Paul, she suspects the murderer might be closer than anyone imagines.

All could have gone smoothly if George, the man Jane, a beautiful library assistant, met in a park, had not been bitten by a dog. But the sight of blood spilling from the body of a man who attracts plunges the young woman into the vortex of a neurosis upsetting her sex life, leading her to a short encounter with lesbian love.

It is the story of Werner Gladow, the notorious Berlin gang leader who, at the age of 17, led one of the most "successful" and ruthless criminal gangs of the post-war period.

Eberwein, Renate and Otto run a bar high above the Rhine, overlooking the romantic Lorelei. But no-one wants to climb high above the Rhine in these post-war days, and things look bleak for the future. However out of the blue Renate receives a letter to say that she has inherited an inn in Florence, and it seems their troiubles are over. They set off in their old car, and have to get towed most of the way, by a steam roller, a tractor, the carabinieri, and finally by a friendly priest. When they get to their inheritance, they find it is in worse shape than the bar they left behind. Renate goes round the banks to try to get a loan to do the place up, but without success. It looks like a case of out of the frying pan ... but there are two glimmers of light on the horizon; the first is that there is a large secret cavern behind the inn's cellar, containing unimagined possibilities; and the second is that the friendly priest has some money to lend them.
